Prismic vs Contentful
Two headless CMS that split in different directions.

Both started as headless CMSs. Contentstack expanded into content management, personalization, and automation. Prismic stayed headless-first, focused on fast page building and flexible integrations.
Contentstack is bundled. Content, a real-time customer data platform (CDP), personalization, and automation all live inside one platform, and that convenience is real. It also means your content model doubles as a general-purpose schema for every channel, not just your website, so pages sit a step removed from the sections your marketers actually see and edit.
Prismic is headless, and always has been. Slices map directly onto the sections of your design system, so both marketers and AI agents create, iterate, and optimize on-brand pages without translating between a generic schema and what actually shows up on screen. And because Prismic doesn't wire in its own CDP, you connect whichever CDP, digital asset library (DAM), or analytics stack you already run; through MCP, not around it.
Three differences change how your team works day to day: the building blocks, the editing experience, and what AI agents are allowed to touch.
Slices are the official building blocks of your brand system. They are the same sections your team and your AI agents use to create, iterate, and optimize on-brand pages. Everything you can build with Contentstack's content types and Modular Blocks, slices can do too, just arranged more simply.
A content type defines the fields for a page, article, or other object, and developers add a Modular Blocks field to let editors assemble repeatable sections inside it. Modular Blocks can nest inside each other, so structures can go several layers deep.
The Page Builder is where your team creates and edits pages. Marketers assemble pages using Slices already built and approved for your brand, then edit content directly in context. With Prismic's MCP, you can also edit page content straight from tools like Claude or ChatGPT. Everything can be reviewed in the Page Builder before it goes live, so your team stays in control.
Visual Builder gives editors a click-to-edit, drag-and-drop canvas layered on top of whatever content model your developers built. The deeper your Modular Blocks nest, the more setup it takes to keep that canvas mapped to the underlying schema.
AI agents work with the Slices your marketing team has already approved. You can also wire multiple MCPs together into one agentic workflow. A CDP for personalization, a DAM for sourcing your corporate assets, analytics for spotting what to optimize next, a PIM for generating rich content from your product catalog, all producing pages your team still reviews before anything publishes.
The Contentstack MCP Server and Agent OS (with its in-app assistant, Polaris) reach across the whole platform, content, Launch, Personalize, Automate, Brand Kit, following whatever content model and Modular Block nesting your team designed. As of 2026, Contentstack's docs still label the MCP server experimental and not officially supported for production use.
