Slice reusability

Create pages faster by reusing slices

We are exploring ways to boost your productivity by letting you intuitively reuse slices with existing content across pages.

Hi there,

We are excited to share an area the Page Builder team at Prismic is currently considering to boost your productivity and efficiency when creating pages with Prismic.

Based on your feedback, we understand that the top-requested improvement is the introduction of slice reusability. While you can currently duplicate slices within a page, sharing and updating these slices across multiple pages remains a challenge.

To address this, we are actively considering enhancements that will enable you to easily duplicate and reuse slices across your pages. Inspired by tools like Pitch, this potential update will allow you to effortlessly manage and replicate slices, saving you time and effort.

We believe these enhancements could significantly streamline your content creation process, making you more efficient and productive.

As we explore this possibility, your feedback is crucial in helping us develop a feature that works best for you.

Copy-paste multiple slices at once

We're rolling out the ability to copy and paste multiple slices at once. Now, you can recreate pages even faster by reusing your content with fewer clicks.

To use the feature, select multiple slices by holding Shift, then press Cmd + C, and Cmd + V to paste them into any page where those slices are available.

Stay tuned for more improvements to enhance your content creation workflow!

🚢 Copy and Paste your slice

Well, that was quick.....

Recently we embarked on some user research to test a couple of concepts we have been working on regarding slice reusability. One was copying and pasting slices and the other was a 'reusable' slice where you could share content across pages. Both concepts received overwhelmingly positive feedback. Through this research, we understood the appetite for features that can unlock the power of slices and speed up the content editing progress. We want you to spend less time on monotonous repetitive tasks and more time on creative work. This is just the first step in speeding up the editing experience.

So, after the research, we began developing Copy and Paste a slice and today we are pleased to announce that the feature is now available for all users (across all types of slices). With this feature, you can cmd + c (or if you're old school you can click in the slice menu and select copy) and then you can cmd + v (or click paste in the slice menu) and you have an exact copy of your slice including the content. This feature works across pages where this slice is available, so if the slice does not exist in a page type, you will be unable to paste it.

We will continue to iterate on this concept including adding the ability to copy and paste multiple slices across pages as well as continuing to work on the 'reusable' slice. Stay tuned for more updates!

Slice reusability research

TfW you just start working on something and then you get this from a customer...

Last week was one of those weird times where, at the exact moment we were working on a product brief and the first iteration of a feature, we received a message requesting something pretty much in line with what we are designing.

In fact, for the last quarter or so, we've been hearing a lot from our users about the need to be able to reuse their slices across pages. Given our UI and UX are inspired by tools for creating slide decks such as Pitch, there is an expectation that we support similar features, such as copying and pasting slices.

Right now, we're in the process of launching some user research to hear directly from you what you think and see how we could potentially incorporate this into the Page Builder.

So, if this is something that you're interested in and you want to influence how slices could be reused across Prismic, please book a session with me via the following link.
